Moldova Private Farmers Assistance Program Civil Society Support

2000 – 2005

The Private Farmers Assistance Program (PFAP) provided post-privatization assistance to more than 500,000 farmers and rural entrepreneurs in Moldova. Working with farmer cooperatives, producer associations and other local community organizations, EWMI provided the Moldovan private farmers with the skills and tools necessary for their future success. It was also envisioned that as a result of PFAP, a network of institutions, primarily NGOs, would be established and strengthened to provide continuing support to private farmers and enterprises in rural communities throughout Moldova. Therefore, EWMI provided substantial support to local associations and NGOs in order to ensure the sustainability of its efforts. This included the launching of a Social Responsibility Initiative (SRI), in which the PFAP team continued to work with 14 regional Associations of Agricultural Producers to identify potential partners in villages across the country, organize trainings to raise awareness of social responsibility and provide assistance in project development to those potential partners. EWMI provided a grant to the local CONTACT Center from its own funds to support these SRI initiatives.
