Egypt Administration of Criminal Justice Project
EWMI is working to improve indigent criminal defense in Egypt under a subcontract with Chemonics International for the USAID-funded Administration of Criminal Justice Project. EWMI is working in close collaboration with the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) to study, develop and implement a more robust and efficient criminal defense system. This initiative includes an assessment and planning for the development of a public defense system, followed by its full implementation. It will take considerable time to fully develop a reformed public defense system in Egypt, and EWMI will help the government research and evaluate comparative civil law public defense system models. This process will include a study tour for PGO and Ministry of Justice officials, as well as other key stakeholders, to a relevant jurisdiction. To promote dialogue, share information, and build consensus for public defense related reforms, EWMI will help the PGO convene a criminal justice policy forum series to engage the broader legal community, followed by a national-level criminal justice conference.
