The Judicial System Strengthening Activity in Uzbekistan (JSSA)
The Judicial System Strengthening Activity in Uzbekistan (JSSA), funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by the East-West Management Institute (EWMI) provides technical assistance for ongoing reforms to the Uzbek judicial system in partnership with key national institutions. Building on EWMI’s implementation of rule of law projects throughout Eastern Europe and Central Asia, JSSA focuses on strengthening the efficiency and responsiveness of the Uzbek judiciary to serve the needs of Uzbek citizens.
JSSA aims to strengthen the administration of justice, the professionalism and integrity of the judiciary, and the openness and public trust in the justice system of Uzbekistan, in collaboration with its national partners. This work directly supports the objectives of the New Uzbekistan Development Strategy for 2022–2026, and mutual priorities of USAID Uzbekistan and national judicial institutions.
To achieve these mutual goals, JSSA focuses on implementation of international best practices, technical support for court administration improvements, judicial training, gender equality in the judiciary, Uzbekistan’s engagement with the international justice community, and promotion of engagement between the judicial system, the media, and the Uzbek public.
EWMI collaborates with national partners to achieve these goals, including the Supreme Court, the Supreme Judicial Council, and the Higher School of Judges. JSSA also leverages the global expertise of its international partners—the International Commission of Jurists and Street Law, Inc.—to support activities related to judicial training and civic legal education.
