EWMI is working to improve indigent criminal defense in Egypt under a subcontract with Chemonics International for the USAID-funded Administration of Criminal Justice Project. EWMI is working in close collaboration with the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) to study, develop and implement a more robust and efficient criminal defense system. This initiative includes an assessment and planning for the development of a public defense system, followed by its full implementation. It will take considerable time to fully develop a reformed public defense system in Egypt, and EWMI will help the government research and evaluate comparative civil law public defense system models.
